MR. WALKER & A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

"A DAY TO CELEBRATE" DEMO DAY, NOV. 3, 2011

As a community service program, NeighborWorks Columbus assists the elderly and/or disabled property owners living in substandard conditions obtain a new home through our Columbus Cottage Program. On Thursday, November 3, 2011, members of this community, Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, Columbus Cottage Advisory Committee, NeighborWorks Columbus Board of Directors and Staff witnessed a home demolition for a great person. Mr. Clyde Walker is the recipient of the 2011 Columbus Cottage Program and he is very deserving.

Mr. Clyde Walker has worked his entire life. His first job was at Prime Electric in Bibb City and later worked for National Linen in Columbus. He moved to Buffalo, New York when he was twenty and worked for 20 years at Will Poultry as a Truck Driver. After retiring, he returned to his hometown roots in Georgia. His roof starting leaking, leading to total corrosion of the main beams and sinking floors, making the house virtually unlivable. His love of working with tools shows in his home where he has laid tile, patched the roof several times, and built the closets and cabinets himself. Mr. Walker is a proud and dignified man who at the age of 73 is still working hard. He remains humbled by the announcement that he will soon be the proud owner of a new Cottage on the lot where he had happy family memories for years.

As Co-Chair of the Columbus Cottage Program, Mayor Teresa Tomlinson operated the bulldozer that demolished Mr. Walker’s former home located at 5014 13^th Avenue, Columbus, Georgia to make room for his new home. During this holiday season, contractors, volunteers and others will be working diligently to complete this new home.  Upon completion of this home, we will turn over the keys of Cottage #4 to Mr. Walker in a Key Ceremony and it is open to the public.

Purpose of the Columbus Cottage Program

The NeighborWorks® Columbus “Columbus Cottage” program will:

1. Provide safe, sanitary, efficient housing for elderly and/or disabled residents at risk of becoming homeless
2. Preserve affordable housing within the Columbus community
3. Replace aging substandard housing units
4. Target persons most in need of intervention
5. Improve quality of life of its participants
6. Permit aging in place on owner’s property

NWColumbus HOME BUYERS WORKSHOP - October 15, 2011

NeighborWorks® Columbus HOME BUYERS PROGRAM

Where to start? The Homeownership Center staff will review your

income, debt and credit information to determine your first step.

We offer services that prepare our clients for home ownership. We have a homebuyer

education and counseling program, we offer down payment assistance, we provide

access to low interest loans and, we build houses. We also have a credit-rebuilding

program. It is our mission to help you become a homeowner.

The first step to enter our program is to attend a one-hour homebuyer orientation. At that

meeting you'll learn everything you need to know about the services we provide. And

you’ll have a chance to ask questions. If you decide to take the next step, you’ll fill

out an application and pay $18.00 so we can pull your credit report. We use this

information to design a homeownership program that’s tailored to your needs.

Once you have completed the registration paperwork a staff member will review

your income, debt and credit information to determine which parts of our

program would be best for your individual needs.
