MOLD - HOMEOWNERS & INSPECTION Pt. 3

Does your home have mold?
“Any sign of water damage or mold should be traced to its source. Most of the serious problems that home inspectors see are with water: water seeping into basements, pooling in crawl spaces, leaking in from siding or trickling down from roofs. Left alone, water causes rot and mold. All too often, homeowners do not discover the problems or if they do, they ignore them. Either way, unsuspecting buyers can inherit expensive repairs. Some of the worst damage is caused by black mold, which is suspected of causing health problems and which can spread quickly throughout a house. It can cost a couple hundred thousand dollars" to remediate a bad case of black mold. You might have to tear out all the cabinets and treat every surface in your home."

"Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in the indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling moisture indoors."
